AEO
Answer Engine Optimization
- AEO
- AEO (answer engine optimization) is the practice of structuring your pages so AI-driven answer systems can extract and cite them directly. Where SEO targets a ranking in a list, AEO targets being the answer itself: direct 40–60 word responses to real questions, evidence in the text, and machine-readable facts.
AEO predates the current AI wave — the term originally covered featured snippets and voice assistants — but it now mostly means on-site work aimed at retrieval-based AI surfaces: Perplexity, ChatGPT search and Google AI Overviews. These systems fetch pages at answer time, pull out the passages that respond to the question, and cite the sources they used. AEO's job is making your pages the easiest ones to pull from.
In practice that means extraction-friendly writing (each key page opens with a direct answer to a real buyer question), evidence density (statistics and named sources in the text), structured data, and confirmed access for AI crawlers. Because these fixes live on your own site, they move faster than off-site authority work — typically weeks, not quarters.
Example: a law firm's practice page opening 'At our firm, we understand accidents are stressful' gives an engine nothing to lift. Rewritten to open with what a car-accident claim is typically worth and what affects it, the same page becomes a quotable source. AEO is the fast half of the work; GEO is the compounding half. We treat AEO as secondary vocabulary — GEO is the umbrella term the industry settled on — but the on-site discipline it names is where most engagements start. It's the focus of our answer engine optimization service.
