Zero-click

Zero-click
A zero-click search is one that ends without a visit to any website — the searcher got what they needed from the results page or an AI answer. 68% of Google searches now end this way, which is why visibility inside answers matters even when it doesn't produce a click your analytics can count.

The trend line is the story: 68.01% of U.S. Google searches ended without a click in early 2026, up from 60.45% in 2024 (Search Engine Land / SparkToro). Answers absorbed the click. Featured snippets started it, AI Overviews accelerated it — the same study found click-through drops roughly 60% when an overview appears — and standalone answer engines complete it: a ChatGPT recommendation involves no results page at all.

The strategic consequence cuts deeper than lost traffic: influence and traffic have come apart. A buyer can ask an engine who to hire, hear three names, and call one — a commercial outcome your analytics records nowhere. Traffic-based measurement systematically undercounts what AI answers do to a pipeline, which is why we measure presence in the answers themselves (mention rate, citation share) rather than waiting for clicks that were never coming.

The honest counterweight: zero-click doesn't mean zero-value clicks. The visitors who do click through from AI answers convert unusually well — arriving pre-qualified, comparison already done. And being the cited source in the answer captures value even from the visits that never happen: the searcher who doesn't click still saw who the engine trusted. In a zero-click world, being the answer's source is the visibility; the click is a bonus.
